High-Precision Grinding Solutions by Koonze Model

At Koonze Model, we deliver precision grinding services engineered for tight tolerances and exceptional surface finishes. From one-off components to large-scale production, our capabilities serve industries such as automotive, aerospace, and heavy equipment.

We specialize in four core grinding processes to match various geometries and technical needs:

  • Cylindrical Grinding
  • Centerless Grinding
  • Internal Grinding
  • Spindle Grinding

Our Precision Grinding Workflow

At Koonze Model, every grinding project follows a meticulous, quality-driven process to ensure accuracy, consistency, and optimal performance. From initial review to final inspection, we apply rigorous standards to deliver components that meet your exact specifications.

1
Requirement Analysis
We begin by reviewing your drawings, material needs, and tolerance requirements to determine the most suitable grinding method.
2
Process Planning
Our engineers define the grinding approach—surface, cylindrical, centerless, or internal—based on part geometry and performance criteria.
3
Equipment Setup
Precision grinding machines are calibrated, and the appropriate abrasives are selected to match your material and finish goals.
4
Grinding Execution
The CNC machine positions the tool at the correct starting point and gets ready for drilling.
5
Quality Inspection
Every part undergoes in-process and final inspection using high-precision measuring tools to verify tolerances and surface quality.
6
Finishing & Delivery
Parts are cleaned, deburred (if needed), and packed securely for prompt delivery—ready for assembly or final application.

Alternatives to Precision Grinding

For certain components, abrasive grinding may not be the most efficient or suitable solution. At Koonze Model, we provide a range of alternative machining methods tailored to your part’s geometry, material, and performance requirements. See the options below for more details.

Reaming

Reaming is used to precisely size and smooth existing holes, typically performed with a drill or milling machine. It offers tight tolerances—down to +0.0002”—comparable to precision grinding, but is limited to internal features only.

Honing

Honing is a precision finishing process that uses an abrasive stone in a reciprocating, rotating motion to refine internal surfaces. It produces a distinctive cross-hatch pattern and achieves tight tolerances down to +0.0005”. Honing is ideal for improving straightness, roundness, and taper in holes, though it requires longer setup times and higher initial equipment costs compared to other methods.

Lapping

Lapping is a fine finishing process that uses an abrasive slurry to precisely remove material and achieve tight tolerances. The slurry—a mix of abrasive powder and liquid—is applied between two surfaces rubbing together. The workpiece remains stationary while a lap plate moves in a reciprocating motion against it. Lapping can reach dimensional accuracy as tight as 0.00002” (0.5 microns), making it ideal for ultra-precise parts. However, surface finish uniformity may vary after lapping.

FAQs About Koonze Model’s Precision Grinding Services

What grinding tolerances can Koonze Model achieve?

We can achieve tolerances as tight as ±0.0001 inch (±2.5 microns), depending on part geometry and material. Standard tolerances typically fall within ±0.0002 to ±0.0005 inch.

What materials can be processed with your grinding services?

We work with a variety of metals including steel, stainless steel, aluminum, brass, titanium, and hardened alloys. Custom materials can be evaluated on request.

Do you handle both prototype and production grinding?

Yes. We support both low-volume prototype development and high-volume production runs, maintaining precision and consistency across all batch sizes.

What surface finishes can you deliver?

We can achieve surface finishes as fine as Ra 0.1–0.4 μm depending on the process, which is suitable for demanding applications like medical and aerospace components.

Can you grind hardened or heat-treated materials?

Yes. We specialize in grinding hardened components, including post-heat-treatment parts, ensuring dimensional accuracy without compromising surface quality.

What is the typical lead time for grinding projects?

Lead times vary by complexity and volume, but we typically deliver in 5–7 days. Expedited options are available for urgent jobs.

Can Koonze Model assist with part design for grinding feasibility?
