Alternatives to Precision Grinding
For certain components, abrasive grinding may not be the most efficient or suitable solution. At Koonze Model, we provide a range of alternative machining methods tailored to your part’s geometry, material, and performance requirements. See the options below for more details.
Reaming is used to precisely size and smooth existing holes, typically performed with a drill or milling machine. It offers tight tolerances—down to +0.0002”—comparable to precision grinding, but is limited to internal features only.
Honing is a precision finishing process that uses an abrasive stone in a reciprocating, rotating motion to refine internal surfaces. It produces a distinctive cross-hatch pattern and achieves tight tolerances down to +0.0005”. Honing is ideal for improving straightness, roundness, and taper in holes, though it requires longer setup times and higher initial equipment costs compared to other methods.
Lapping is a fine finishing process that uses an abrasive slurry to precisely remove material and achieve tight tolerances. The slurry—a mix of abrasive powder and liquid—is applied between two surfaces rubbing together. The workpiece remains stationary while a lap plate moves in a reciprocating motion against it. Lapping can reach dimensional accuracy as tight as 0.00002” (0.5 microns), making it ideal for ultra-precise parts. However, surface finish uniformity may vary after lapping.
